Rockstar Games has been a
successful gaming company for nearly two decades owning many smaller branches
from the head office such as the popular Rockstar North which have created one
of the most well-known games amongst the world and the gaming industry to date.
They have offices in all corners of the globe.
Rockstar
was originally created by Brothers Sam & Dan Hausser; this was after they
got jobs at BMG Interactive working in the music department before eventually
being transferred to the games development department. BMG Interactive was
bought by Take-Two Interactive resulting in their gaming assets and staff being
transferred to Take-Two Interactive. Sam & Dan Hausser were eventually made
heads of the game development department and they decided to rename the
department to Rockstar after originally dreaming of becoming Rockstars.
One of the first games Rockstar
began developing was an open-world sandbox known as Grand Theft Auto. The game
came out October 1997 and was able to sell just over a million copies which was
good for Rockstar’s standards at the time only being a small game developing
studio. This then made them bring out a sequel which was just as popular which
then set the future goals for Rockstar as remaining a more mature audience type
of game developing company. Rockstar Games branches itself out into many
different smaller companies via vertical integration which means these smaller
companies all work on their own games and testing but are all a part of the
same Rockstar Games family.
Since this
boom in sales it put Rockstar in a very good financial positon to develop an
even better sequel. Rockstar North were then put to the job of GTA III. This
was a 3D sandbox open world game with a fully functioning campaign, money system
with may cut scenes. This was a breakthrough ion the gaming industry with many
games still being quick casual plays whereas this game lets you connect with
the characters and have no limitations to gameplay. GTA II sky rocketed in
sales and put Rockstar Games as one of the top developers of that time. Ever since
then their game releases have revolved around action or open world games such
as games like Manhunt, L.A Noire and Red Dead Redemption. However even with all
these popular games none could ever top the Grand Theft Auto Series. This is
Rockstars most prized game and is what started off their whole company becoming
a success and paved their way to focusing on mainly open world games.
