P4 - A,B,C,D, M1 (Genre, Narrative/Storyline, Characters, Platforms)

P4 A – Genre

For people who do not know yet, Angry Birds is a very popular Puzzle game which is played by millions. Each level is designed to be more difficult as you play through the levels. It fits into the casual gaming genre as it does not require skill effort or much time to play which means it can be played leisurely without any stress or fast paced gameplay such as other games. Each level has the same objects and enemies in but gradually get more difficult and the player has to think where to take their shots which is the puzzle aspect as it will restart the level if all the enemies are not destroyed before you have used your last bird. This game is the heart of casual puzzle games and can be played nearly anywhere, not to the fact it is easy to complete the levels just that it is easy to play the actual game without being a hard-core gamer as it can be used to pass the time.

P4 – B – Narrative/Storyline

The storyline to this game is simple yet effective due to it being humorous and attractive to young children all the way up to elderly people as it contains a fun story free of complexity. The story is harmless and fun and consists of some green pigs who had taken the birds eggs which turns them angry (hence the name of the game) and they travel through the levels destroying the pigs trying to find where their eggs have gone. The story will show small cut scenes to show what is going on every few levels such as the pigs running away further.

P4 – C – Characters

There are a few characters in the game some of which are protagonists and others are antagonists. Here is a list of the protagonist characters: Red, Chuck, Bomb, Matilda, Mighty Eagle and Terence. The antagonists are pigs or piggy’s and are green coloured and their leader is called Leonard. All of these characters come in weird and wonderful sizes and colours which makes them more appealing to the audience as they are likeable characters and memorable.

P4 – D - Platforms

This small little game started off on just an IOS device as a small game but since their original new innovative casual gaming idea it has blown up around the world. It has become massively popular and remains in the iTunes top grossing games for years now. It is available on: IOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and then once it had reached major worldwide attention it the managed to get ported onto games consoles and PC’s.

M1 – Target Audience, Recommendation Of Reviewer, Gameplay, Overall Rating.

I would say the target audience for this game is anybody from the ages 3 and over due to the easy controls, non-difficult objectives and levels and the colourful characters and funny storyline. Children will enjoy the bright colours as such and adults will also like the game as it would be good to kill time or to causally play on the go or at home as there are many levels to keep people occupied.

Personally I would recommend this game as there is no reason not to have it. It includes all the aspects to a fun casual game which is not competitive and can be played whenever and wherever. The controls are easy and the game has a lengthy play time depending on your skill level. The sheer comical idea of using green pigs and wingless birds makes it appealing and original when compared to other games. The gameplay is fun and may be repetitive in what you have to do but each level is different and makes you not think about it being similar as the actual content of each level is completely different and gets harder as you progress. Nobody had thought outside the box like this before which makes it so interesting to play as it is something new on the market rather than a recycled idea. It is free to play so what is stopping you?

Graphics

I would rate the graphics 80% out of 100% this may seem low but its only due to there not being much graphics to actually comment on as in each level there are the same character’s textures and backgrounds. However, it is rated 80% as the actual quality of the game is crisp and smooth and runs at a good frame rate on new devices but on older devices it is very slow and may not load. The quality is HD at around 720p and is not pixelated and is the opposite to an eyesore.

Gameplay

I would rate the gameplay 96% out of 100%. I rated it this as the gameplay is fun and enjoyable and does not feel like a chore due to the gameplay being casual and non-competitive or fast paced and levels can be repeated at any time. It may be slightly repetitive but doesn’t get boring and there are many levels to complete meaning the playing time is lengthy.

Accessibility

It is very accessible due to the only controls being selecting a bird swiping the camera and then swiping the screen to target and fire the bird at6 the pigs. Anybody at any age could pick up the skills to play this game as it is not complicated whatsoever and doesn’t need any prior knowledge to the game if somebody was going to play the sequel. Therefore, I would also rate gameplay 96% out of 100%

Lifespan

I believe that this game has a long life span as some levels can be difficult and can take time to complete. There is also a vast amount of missions which adds up the playing time anyway. If the game does end up being completed it would still be fun to replay all of the missions a second time. I would rate the life span 90% out of 100%

Innovation

Angry birds is a very innovative out of the box idea due to its sheer greatness at making the humorous storyline work alongside easily passable missions and not having any real difficulty until you are further into the game. It is an idea which has not been done before as it is such a bizarre idea which managed to take off as a franchise. I would give it an innovation rating of 95% due to the original never done before idea.

Overall I would rate this game 96% out of 100% for its originality and lengthy gameplay which is different every level and remains fun even at level 50. It will always be a dominating game due to people always playing it when they are bored, trying to pass the time or just have some spare time. It is good for all the family and has no real difficulty allowing many ages no matter how young or old to play it.

P3 - A, B, C, D , E, F, G (Genre, Target Audience, Narrative/Storyline, Gameplay, Personal Recommendation Of Viewer)

P3
Battlefield 1 – The Guardian Newspaper Review

A - Genre: The guardian says that the genre to this game is a military shooter which suggests it’s a game full of violence action and fast paced gameplay. It also mentions that due to the game now being focused on World War One rather than the future it stands apart from other games making it appealing and a new fresh idea. It also has a multi-playing aspect which allows people to connect which means the genre is also an online multiplayer genre.

B – Target Audience: The article states that the game had got inspiration from DICES other successful game which is Star Wars Battlefront and the target audience for this game is people who enjoy FPS shooters and action games with a good storyline including multiplayer. The article mentioned that the game was for mature audiences (18) which means it will appeal to people around that age as they will have time to play around their jobs and education.

C – Narrative/Storyline: The article says that the storyline is set in World War One and features 6 different war stories which means you follow a series of different characters and storylines which makes it more immerse and creates a connection between the player and the characters. It is also set around the battlefield of world war one with tank regiments and unexpected heroes in the game complete with plot twists and emotional cut scenes. It features all years between 1914-1918.

D - Characters: The characters it mentions is a series of characters who are from different regiments and different countries. For example, it says there are characters from: Australia Special Forces, The Italian Arditi and the British Tank Regiment. It explains how the character choices are broad and are not just from a specific country which also includes Germans which gives a story of both sides of the coin rather than just showing the Allies beating the Axis.

E - Gameplay: The gameplay is vast in this game as it mentions in the article. It talks about how there is tank combat along with dogfights which all of the vehicles are player controlled. It mentions that the multiplayer maps are vast and the games can last up to an hour. It says that it is easy to understand and then talks through each soldier class and what its uses are and what they are good for: e.g. Assault class and Support class.

F – Platforms: Battlefield 1 is featured on a variety of different platforms. The article says it is featured on the PC via Origin and available and the PS4 or Xbox One via disc or download using their marketplaces built into the console.

G – Personal Recommendation Of Reviewer: It is mainly a positive review but is not biased as it points out some features which are not that good such as vehicles being spawned in by players not by the actual game now. However, that point aside it calls the game “the most beautiful first person shooter ever made”. It then goes on into more detail into why and talks about how it is a new original idea and should be bought by the reader.

Battlefield 1 – YouTube Review (VideoGamerTV)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgaCAjnRyGg

A - Genre: It mentions how it is one of the best “FPS action games” created and that it is out of the box and beats the other current FPS games as they are all set around the same time whereas this is original historical shooter game which has not been a popular genre for a while.

B – Target Audience: He says it will appeal to hardcore battlefield fans who used to play the old WW2 battlefield games or who do not enjoy future set games and prefer older set games as it is set in WW1. He also mentions that people who prefer harder to play FPS games will enjoy it more unlike games such as call of duty as he said that is too fast paced.

C – Narrative/Storyline: It says that the narrative features 6 war stories which happened and they were turned into missions on the game. It says it is a really well done campaign compared to the older games campaigns. He says the storyline can seem quite farfetched when it has been created but he says he is not sure if it was the developers who did that or that was how the soldier had actually told their story.

D - Characters: He talks about how some of the stories are emotional such as a soldier losing his brother in the battlefield and that it’s that realistic it feels like it’s happening right in front of your eyes. He said all the characters have different personalities and goals as many are from different countries and fighting on different sides.

E - Gameplay: The review says that the single player mode which is the campaign is “great” and that the multiplayer is “spectacular”. It says it does not change the aspect of the game that much even though it is 100 years in the past compared to the old games. However, it does say the new weapons which are WW1 weapons take some getting used to such as bolt action rifles taking time to reload and riddles being inaccurate. He says destruction of objects is incredible such as destroying buildings and vehicles.

F – Platforms: He said its available on Xbox One, PC and Ps4 but the PC has the best graphics out of the three platforms and that the Xbox and PS4 have similar graphics which is set at 1080p 60fps.

G – Personal Recommendation Of Reviewer: He says it gives you a sense of feel that you are actually in the battlefield and it “makes you feel terrific”. He says it makes you feel a part of it and that it’s a world class multiplayer and single player game which should be bought on Christmas.

Battlefield 1 – IGN Review

http://me.ign.com/en/battlefield-next/125355/review/battlefield-1-review

A – Genre: The IGN review calls Battlefield 1 a fantastic first-person shooter series and has an exhilarating multiplayer. It also says how its use of world war one style creates a change to the series and separates it to other FPS shooters.

B - Target audience: This review mentions that the people who will enjoy this game are people who want to play a meaningful campaign which will actually mean something to them as well as playing an immerse multiplayer game which does not get boring and that each map is different in terrain size and gameplay.

C - Narrative/storyline: The review said that the game is not known for a very good multiplayer but this time it is different and the storyline is a nice change of pace due to the different use of characters and it helps “juggle charm and tragedy and helps humanise the war” He says each war story which is a section of the campaign captures the war grandly even in its smallness.

D - Characters: He said the game makes you connect with the characters personally rather than feeling like a “bombastic history lesson” the review liked the way that there were many different soldiers you could play as on different battlefields. He said he likes the importance the game makes of the all black and all Puerto Rican men.

E - Gameplay: He describes the multiplayer as being one of battlefields strong points as the game still samples the games well known objective capturing and vehicle warfare. He says the gameplay is not your typical patriotic game and cuts out that whole good guys beat bad guy’s aspects. He says the game teaches you how to play the game through the first mission which will allow new players to easily pick up the controls and play.

F - Platforms:  It says that the game is to be released on the top 3 dominating most powerful platforms: PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for £40-£45

G - Personal recommendation of reviewer: The review is mixed but gives an honest opinion highlighting the good and bad points by suggesting what could have been done better and what should have been added. He wished the campaign was longer but recommends the game due to the multiplayer being the dominant part to the game and being well designed.

P2 - F - Target Audience

Target Audience P2 – F

Grand Theft Auto

The game may be rated 18 or Mature but as a matter of fact a giant bulk of the audience who regularly play the gamer are teenagers ranging from the ages of 13-18 but rockstar cannot actually range it at these ages officially due to the content but in the gaming it is a known joke that many of the players are young children and many things appeal to these male high school kids such as the drugs the excessive violence and activities such as drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

The audience is arguably more male due to the use of gentlemen’s clubs and other sensitive subjects which would appeal to the male audience much more. On top of that the three main characters are all male and have a very alpha male type personality.

The audience appeals to casual gamers due to the open world aspect yet appeals to hard-core gamers also due to the many different things available on the game. People who enjoy violence, shooters, driving games and in depth story lines will be instantly attracted to this game as it has nearly everything many games how such as side activities which are not violent meaning it can appeal to a broad spectrum of people.

Minecraft

Minecraft is targeted to all ages 7 and over. It is easy to play and understand yet still appeals to older audiences due to the architectural aspect to it such as people creating cities and crating small communities online. It is quite casual to play as there is no end to the game it is continuous and each generated world is different. It is a relaxing game and does not require fast paced game play It can be very suitable to casual and hard-core gamers alike as the open world gives them to option to do whatever they want.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The audience is arguably more male due to the use of character design such as designing female characters to be desirable. On top of that the three main characters are all male and have a very alpha male type personality and in all of the games there has never been a female lead.

The audience appeals to gamers who are all about story-line and campaign as this is all about the in depth story behind it all as it connects to all the other games and has some scenes which the player can relate. The people who enjoy this game will also have a casual aspect due to the free-roaming aspect.

It also appeals to that who enjoy extensive action and violence due to the nature of the game play and the actual storyline.

P2 - E - Gameplay

P2 – E – Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto V:
The gameplay in GTA is very diverse compared to other games as there are many different types of “gameplay” and many different interpretations of it. Firstly there is the Driving gameplay which is where the player is able to control: Automobiles, Tanks, Planes, Helicopters and boats this is one aspect of gameplay travelling and getting by. Also there is a section of gameplay called GTA Races where you race your friends in selected cars just like a normal racing game. The next type of game play is First Person Shooting or FPS. GTA V introduced an FPS update in 2014 which allowed the players to view out of the characters eyes while shooting driving walking etc. This is a change of play compared to the original 3rd person playing mode and is easy to switch between each views which makes it dynamic and very easy for users to change their view points.
The next piece of gameplay is the Shooter gameplay. This when the player is using guns and other means of violence to kill people and destruct the world around them. There are many available guns for purchase in GTA ranging from pistols to rocket launchers. There is also a functioning money system in the game which is used to buy cars houses guns etc. it is the economy of the game and cannot function to its top potential without the players earning and spending money via the missions given.
The game is also completely sandbox which means the player can roam as any of the 3 characters whenever they want with no restrictions due to the game not being linear when you are not in a mission. This aspect makes it much more enjoyable and even though you could have completed the campaign you can still drive around etc. and perform he same activities as before rather than the game ending.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain:
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pains gameplay is also very immerse and has many different aspects just like GTA V. It is only a small aspect of the game but vehicles are used to drive around the games open world maps which is a 3rd person camera view of the driving vehicle. They can be used destructively these vehicles such as tanks and horses having their own uses in the game.
The game also has a first person aspect which is used when looking through binoculars, rifle scopes and when crawling through enclosed spaces. It makes the game more immerse as you are looking through the characters eyes. The first person aspect cannot be used roaming around unless you are in combat.
The game has a combat aspect which gives the player the options of hand to hand combat, non-lethal ammunition and lethal ammunition. The game requires players to achieve their missions using stealth or by going in loud; it is solely the players choice to which option they choose.
The game also has hunting aspects such as hunting animals collecting plants and converting enemy soldiers to join your army. The soldiers and capture animals are transported to the army base where they can be viewed and interacted with. The base is a 2km wide establishment disguised as an oil rig.

Minecraft
Minecraft has quite a niche gameplay when compared to other games as it is such an original idea. One of the main game-playing aspects is survival. The player is challenged to survive in the randomly generated world full of different environments. Tools, supplies and shelter all has to be crafted from what the player has found in the world whether it be bricks, stairs, weapons, food etc.
The player has to watch out for enemies who come out during the night and try to destroy the built shelters or try to kill the character which results in the character losing all of their items and spawning as a new character.
It is quite a time consuming game and takes dedicated playing time to achieve certain things such as trying to find certain animals or resources resulting in endless playing time and no end point. People have the choice to survive in the world or go into creative mode and can use unlimited resources to create things such as structures, cities or anything whatever the player desires to do.

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2
This gameplay varies depending on what you want to do on the game. There is the choice between the linear story led campaign, Multiplayer either against AI or real people also playing the game too consisting of 10 different competitive game modes and finally the Zombies game mode where 4 friends battle against rounds of zombies to try and survive for as long as they can.
Call Of Duty is known for its fast paced gameplay style in all three aspects of the game and is casual/competitively played.
Firstly one of the game-playing aspects is the campaign. This is a single player experience where the player takes the role of David Mason and goes through a series of story led missions as well as various cut scenes. This campaign leads on from the previous title and this appeals to players who enjoy stories.
The second way this game can be played is through the online aspects which is a multiplayer game mode where the player is able to battle in 10+ game modes with either AI or other players using an internet connection. There are ranks which shows what level you are alive so that people can get ahead of others.

Finally the last aspect of the game is zombies which is completely different to the other two parts as it is against pure AI zombies not humans and the only end goal is to survive there is no way to complete missions like in the campaign and there is no ranking system also.

P2 - D - Characters

P2 – D – Characters
GTA –V:
Franklin

GTA create many different profiles of their characters and go into depth of their life stories so that the player gets attached and feels emotion towards the character even though they don’t exist. Franklin Clinton was born in 1998 in the inner city of Los Santos and was surrounded by drugs, gang culture and violence. Throughout his life he has been subject to hardship such as his mother dying of an overdose when he was younger and him being racially profiled and arrested for crimes he did not commit. He is an only child and affiliates himself with his childhood friend Lamar Davis. In the game he repossesses’ cars but is taken to gun point by Michael but they soon become friends as he realises he is just doing his job. From here they both pan out to do in game missions together and to plan heists with the other character Trevor. He is brave and unafraid of danger ahead of him.

Trevor

Trevor Phillips is a character who features in GTA V. He is one of the main characters and is controllable by the player. He is a sociopath and shows no remorse to his actions such as killing torturing and robbing people. He is also very emotional and has strong trusting relationships with the people he likes. He is originally from Canada and grew up in a violent household before his parents abandoned him. He joined the military as a pilot but was kicked out due to a physiological examination which founded he had severe mental health issues. Since his first crime which was a small robbery it continued to appeal to him to commit crimes throughout his life which resulted in him meeting with the other protagonists in the game.

Michael

Michael De Santa who was originally called Michael Townley is one of the main characters in GTA V. He was born in 1965 and is an ex bank robber but he begins to lose lots of money and is running short on keeping his mansion and livelihood funded. This results in him wanting to start bank robbing again but he needs a team. He then meets Franklin and begins to perform these criminal activities together. He has two children and a wife who all live with him but Michael is going through a mid-life crisis and needs the money even though he is under watch and protection by the FBI as they made a deal to rat out his old team members for his own safety. Michael can have outbursts of anger and is very passionate about his bank heists. He also has a guilty conscience due to him setting up his friends at a bank heist for his own protection and to have a clean slate with the law.

Minecraft:
SteveImage result for minecraft steve
In Minecraft there is no actual storyline but the character you play as is “Steve” the players can customise this skin but this is the default skin. It is your job as the player to make Steve do whatever you want whether it be build mine or hunt. He is mute and does not talk nor make facial expressions. However, many people use Steve in player made role-plays when they play with friends. Steve’s outfit cannot be changed but armour can be put over it. He has basic pixel made features such as his blue shirt and dark blue jeans. The name Steve was originally chosen by the creator of Minecraft “Notch”.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain:

Big Boss
Big Boss has appeared in many other metal gears but in this version his appearance is much different. He has shrapnel lodged in his head and many scarring injuries. He is known to the world as the greatest soldier that ever lived and even after his right eye being taken out he is still holding that title as he has the skills to take out entire armies without even being detected. He is quite a reserved person and does not get attached to many people. He usually does not talk much either and is rather spoken to than speaking to others.

Ocelot:
Ocelot is a recurring character just like Big Boss and has appeared in many of the games. He is a mysterious character and he is quite manipulative and uses this to his advantage by double crossing people to suit his own needs and objectives. In some games, he is the antagonist but in others such as in The Phantom Pain he works alongside the protagonist.

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2
Alex Mason
He is a CIA combative operative and a Marine Force Recon Captain. He is one of the first playable characters in Black Ops II. He was born in 1933 and enlisted into the USMC at the height of the Cold War. He served in the Korean war and the Vietnam War meeting the other protagonist in the game Frank Woods. He stayed in the Military for the rest of his life but in the 1980’s he was presumed dead after being killed by the main antagonist for the game Raul Menendez”.

David Mason
David Mason is the Son of Alex Mason and has also led a military career like his father. He joined up to the services due to his dad inspiring yet forcing him to. In the game, he is the main playable character and he is trying to kill the man who killed his father back in 1980. He is a likeable character and has similar attributes to his father.

P2 - C - Production Process

Grand Theft Auto V

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Image result for metal gear solid v the phantom painThe production for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was different to many other games as it had a different approach to a marketing strategy. To gather an audience, the production company Konami created a small prologue game called Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. It was released March 2014 using the same graphics engine and physics so that users had an insight to what the game was like. This prologue game was available on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4. It was released for £6 originally for download but then was made free to play eventually which allowed thousands of people to try out the game and test out all the mechanics. After this game had been released for two months another trailer for the full game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had been released which created more hype. Overall it had cost Konami $80 million on production overall. On the release date in September the game gathered $179 million worldwide and gained much media attention. As a result, the game received 5 “Game of The Year” awards which is an award given to the best games of that year with all aspects of the game taken into account.

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2

Image result for blops 2Throughout the production of this game, so many leaks of the games name and story dissolved much of the hype due to developer’s secretly leaking information and mistakes of activision telling retailers about the game before it was announced. However, it did become a worldwide success in the end, due to its use of using the same production team as the team who created the prequel Black Ops 1. On November 8th 2011 Activision CEO’s announced in a conference that the newest Call Of Duty game was now in development for a release one year from the date. On release, Black Ops II sold 7.5 million copies in the USA grossing over $500 million in that country alone. It resulted in the game being the biggest gaming launch of all time which it held for a year until GTA V took the title.
